Tan An “banh trang” (girdle cake) has become a speciality of Quang Binh people and an unique gift to tourists to Quang Binh.

Tan An “banh trang” is thicker than “banh trang” made in other places. It is well-known throughout the country for its qualities which are highly appreciated.

The harsh sun and dry, sandy soil of Quang Binh are ideal for growing a special variety of sweet potatoes. Quang Binh locals call them “deo” potatoes. After being harvested, the sweet potatoes are put aside, then peeled and thinly sliced. Deo potatoes require a lot of sun to be dry, crunchy, chewy and sweet. Visitors to Quang Binh often take deo potatoes home as a gift.

An Xa Sedge Mat Village, which is 40 km to the south of Dong Hoi City, belongs to Loc Thuy Commune, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh province.

Using raw materials on the spot, like sedge, and the delicate knitting frame, the artists of An Xa make floral sedge mats in all sizes, with beautiful designs to meet the demands of the markets throughout the province and the country.

An Xa sedge mat is much thicker, better, and softer than ones made in other places. In the hot summer, lying on a An Xa mat makes you feel cool, and in the winter you will feel warm with the pure fragrance of sedge.

Currently, An Xa has 107 households with 1.780 people, of which there are 83 households making mat with a total income of about VND1.6 billion a year.

Making conical hats has been a traditional craft for many generations in Quang Binh. There are some places for making conical hats are:

• Ha Thon village (now Quang Tan commune) - one of nine southern communes of Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province.

• Situated in the north of Gianh River, Quang Thuan commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) is famous for making conical hat.

• Located at 45km north of Dong Hoi city, Quy Hau village, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province has been well-known for making conical hat for a long time.

Xuan Bo bamboo and rattan trade village which belongs to Xuan Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province is considered as the cradle of making use of bamboo and rattan.

Xuan Bo village now has about 370 households with 1785 persons who mostly makes bamboo and rattan weaving.

This is the only village of Xuan Thuy commune maintaining and developing this traditional handicrafts.
